So heres what I asked Bill McKibben: I direct a great Sustainability Studies program, that trains and educates students in a variety of crucial ways. We have five majors and six minors, and each are cutting edge. In comparison to private colleges and universities, our tuition for in-state students, is cheap, yet for many of my young scholars, it is still too expensive. They live at home to save money, they work multiple jobs to get by, and yet getting through school is a real economic struggle for them. Yes, they go to Tar Sands marches in DC, climate marches in NYC, fracking rallies in Albany, and theyll even save their pennies for a great travel abroad experience, but to do so is a hardship, and they will carry heavy debt when they graduate. Many of my students of color end up giving up out of exhaustion and worry. These are the very students we want to succeed in our Stony Brook University Sustainability Studies Program and other such programs. So what can we do to help keep these kids? He said, I have no good answer. The minimum wage needs to be increased. I have a simple answer for now... Im going to put a donate button on our website. Im going to pound on doors for help. Im going to fundraise for an endowed position for a scholar of color who teaches environmental justice.
