So, heres whats bothering me. I have a facebook friend (who will probably recognize him/herself) who occasionally posts photos of abused children, with bruises and cuts on their faces. This person, i am certain, is against child abuse, and apparently hopes to raise awareness of such abuse by posting the photos. I find the photos unsettling--they invade what little peace Im able to find in a given day. Im not a child abuser, and am willing to bet that most all of my facebook friends arent either. While I dont want to claim to be overly righteous, I believe I live in a way which does not in any way encourage child abuse. These kinds of pictures mean that I have to be overly careful when using facebook around my young son. As upsetting as these photos are to me, they would be more so to an innocent child who has not ever contemplated the subject of child abuse. I dont get the point of posting these. Is the person trying to get their friends to not abuse children? Probably preaching to the choir. So why upset people by sharing these graphic images? What good is done that balances the psychic damage of having to confront such images at say six a.m. on a peaceful Sunday morning? I had the same problem when the Gaza conflict was flaring a few months ago, and ended up unfriending some people, which I was sorry to do--but I just couldnt take the frequent posting of pictures of war victims bodies--again many of them children, to make a point. I am glad that people are outraged by violence of either kind. But forcing other people to confront images of violence in an otherwise social setting is not cool with me. By posting this, I agree to accept whatever any of you have to say.
