So how does a person win a racist cops understanding? Especially when the cops make racist statements and think of people of color as animals? Especially when racist cops are raised in a culture of racism and superiority? Clearly the cops whove lately shot black kids are NOT repentant, not interested in discussing racism, especially Institutional Racism (which too many people know nothing about). At some point self defense comes into play. Nelson Mandela decided to fight fire with fire: he led people to fight back against corrupt apartheid thugs. Had he not done so, South Africa would still be an apartheid state. King gives too much credit to racists and government types who discriminate. They are never interested in discussing racial relations. Look at the many in the South who fly Confederate flags and call for another civil war. When people of color are slaughtered as a matter of course by those who do not see them as human beings, how can any discussion take place? I hate to say this but it seems Kings philosophy is a failure given the serge in racism and violence against people of color these days. He forced a lull in the hatred, but it survived, like locusts: hidden for awhile but coming back with a vengeance and leaving a wasteland of bodies.
