So, if I hadnt played Metal Gear Solid: Revengeance on PS3 and as a young un seen a fantastic movie on repeat (Nanatron loved it!) named Robocop, this would be a fairly decent little sci-fi action flick. Sadly, the fact that they decided to call it Robocop and essentially borrow the whole aesthetic of Raiden from MSG:R instantly puts me on the back foot, and whilst I gave this a chance, ultimately it left me cold and unwilling to buy it for a dollar. Pitched somewhere between a transhumanist melodrama come soap-opera and badly CGI-ed video game (ED-209 - what have ye become my love?), it lacks the punch, the satire, the biting corporate commentary of the 80s original. The story lacks drive with the iconic OmniCorp, and in particular Michael Keaton, just not providing a particularly evil foil to the supposedly heroic (yet in reality, and ironically, robotically bland) protagonist. They just come off as any other 500+ employee company would - distinctly uninteresting to me. Joel Kinnaman lacks the charm of Peter Weller and the difference in characterisation one would expect between human and cyborg doesnt manifest; if anything he becoming more robotic in performance than a robot. On the plus side, Gary Oldman dials it in and as always, owns every scene hes in. Samuel L. Jackson is on top form giving one of his wide-eyed loon performances - he easily gets the best lines right at the end of the movie. And Abbie Cornish once again lines up for a position in the list of future Mrs. Smarts whilst giving a nicely emotional and to her credit, believeable performance. It was a brave a valiant effort to introduce an iconic 80s movie figure to a new audience, and to their credit, the mishmash of writers did try something new and original. But without the grit of a Detroit that Im told is indeed gritty, without some truly evil power-suited bad guys named Dick (and lest we forget, a complete melty monster in Clarence), without the hilarious spoof advertisements (I want my 6000 SUX!), without 20 seconds to comply, and oddly, without the humanity of the original.. it was doomed to Skynets scrapheap from the start. And dont even get me started on the non-silver stealth stylings of the armour... Proving to some degree that some movies just dont need a remake. Ill give it 6/10. imdb/title/tt1234721/?ref_=nv_sr_1
