So if its a question of American troops losing their lives or the bad guys from Daesh (or ISIL, or ISIS, whatever), Id choose to have the bad guys lose every single time. This video (from an Apache helicopter, using Forward-Looking Infrared) from a few nights ago - on YouTube for now - shows the importance of air power in carrying out the mission. WARNING: THIS VIDEO IS UNCENSORED AND GRAPHIC. You see the ability to distinguish between women and children, and people carrying RPGs (rocket-propelled grenades) and smaller arms, and making the appropriate decisions not to fire. You hear communication between the pilots and with the ground. You see the donkeys being spared in precision attacks. You see people taking up positions against our military, and what happens to them (they wont be down for breakfast). All at night. All apparently unaware that their lives are about to end. If our troops can use this technology and get home safely, Im good with it. As with anything, it can be mis-used, and the amount of care needed for targeting the right people (not the friendlies) is essential. But in this video, it works; our troops get to fight this scourge another day. This is the reality of what they are doing, and it is a job unlike most of us have. As we approach Christmas, remember in your prayers all those away from loved ones, working with their lives on the line to keep us - and our world - safer.
