So, in keeping with my rain theme for the day, Ive spent the last coupla hours looking for the definitive version of Heres that Rainy Day. I listened to performances by Nat King Cole, Julie London, Stan Getz, Doc Severenson and Tommy Newsome, Julie Garland, Chet Baker, Wes, Barney Kessel and quite a few others. Most versions are ruined by strings. They just couldnt help themselves. After careful consideration Sarah Vaughans was the best and most elegant. Freddy Hubbards version was a distant 2nd. Of note is the Art Pepper version with Charlie Haden, Hampton Hawes and Shelley Mann- very hip. Btw, this is not my favorite version. Ill post my fav (a sentimental choice) in a minute.
