So it has to be said that the Italians in Rome are living up to - TopicsExpress

So it has to be said that the Italians in Rome are living up to their driving reputation. When telling people that we (we meaning - Matt) were going to drive ourselves around Europe people looked at us like we were slightly mad - especially when we told them we were going to be in Italy and in particular - Rome. Let me describe what its like. * When approaching a roundabout you dont wait your turn you simply head into the roundabout assuming that people will wait for you even though they are driving at speed and coming straight for you. * The painted lane lines on the road are really there as a suggestion rather than something to take seriously. * When driving you must keep a sharp lookout not just for other cars all driving at warp speed but also numerous mopeds, scooters, bikes, pedestrians, dogs, buses, trams and tourists who dont know the rules. * If waiting at a pedestrian crossing you will never get across the road if you wait for a motorist to let you cross. You must take a deep breath, summon up your courage and step into the oncoming traffic with a steely glint in your eye so they take you seriously and wait for you. If needs be, raise your hand to fend them off and reinforce your message - You shall not pass. * When taking the bus - strap in!! Our bus ride through the narrow cobbled streets of central Rome had us literally bouncing out of our seats and hanging on to avoid sliding around. Even our Italian travelling companion was impressed as we narrowly missed hitting multiple parked mopeds, pedestrians and walls of buildings built far too close together. Felt like we were on a Disney ride! *Finally - Naples was worse! #lillysontour #myhusbandisalegend #Iamanervouswreck
