So it looks like Scarlett Johansson is cast to be Major Motoko Kusanagi in a live action adaptation of Ghost in the Shell. Naturally this has lead to some uproar over giving the role of a Japanese character to a white woman. Normally Im pretty strongly against this kinda of white washing of characters but in this case a lot less so. Mainly because I think it could (though probably wont) lead to an interesting discussion of what is ethnicity in a world where we can literally trade in our body for a new one. The Major was born Japanese sure (though with the animation she could have easily been born white with a Japanese name) but when she was pretty young she had her entire body replaced with a mechanical one. She would likely have the option to be any race or gender she chose. Now Im not saying I wouldnt have preferred a talented Japanese actress in the role but I also understand the studio wanting have the star power of some one like Johansson to head line a movie with a that big of a budget. Im also not saying that i expect this movie will be good (I certainly have my doubts) Its just that I find this significantly less offensive than say that shitty Air Bender movie.
