So it was Saturday, March 29 during the wedding reception of Elaine Jackson and Thomas Rice and I was sitting in the kitchen at my church eating my plate of food. I figured instead of sitting in the hall with everyone else, I would stay close to the caterer and offer any assistance as she broke everything down. It turned out to be a beautiful occasion. I think one of the highlights was making extra tea and lemonade while running back and forth (because folks were thirsty and both beverages had ran low - lol). Everyone was moving about cleaning up and putting everything away while the evening came to a close. Suddenly there came a familiar voice shouting out, Youre so diligent! I looked around and there was Co-Pastor/Evangelist/Prophetess Sylvarena Funderburke folding up a table cloth and looking dead at me. I just shook my head and smiled. It was like she wanted to make sure I heard what she was saying because she came inside the kitchen where I was sitting and said it again, Youre so diligent! And God is going to really bless you for what you have done. Do you know that, Melvin? Of course my reply was Thank the Lord and thank you too! I began to think about what she said later on that evening and it really hit home with me. Some of yall only know of Downtown Melvin Brown as the praiser, the event planner, the voice over the radio waves, someone who puts on musicals, the interior decorator, the public speaker, but none of these things mean a thing. In fact, I dont have to announced or introduced as Downtown. I am merely a servant of the Lord. Ecclesiastes 9:10 says Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with all thy might... It was a joy as well as a privilege to do my Christian duty by helping out, and I dont have to toot my own horn either. Proverbs 27:2 says Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips. Its one thing to have gifts, but its another thing to not misuse them for self gain. I am reminded back in January 2014 while at Christian Tabernacle during the fellowship dinner held after Power of Pentecost Crusade, and my brother, Pastor/Prophet Clarence Johnson said to me You what Brother Melvin, you definitely been been blessed with the gift of helps and administration. Not everyone can do the things you do. I almost hollered right then and there. It means a great deal when the man or woman of God speaks a word and your spirit bears witness. I hope this status doesnt come across as me being deep and removed. I only want to be found sensitive to the Holy Ghost. Thats all. Allow me to admonish you. My grandmother always taught us its just nice to be nice. Dont always look for something in return. And if the Lord says He is going to bless you, that doesnt necessarily indicate it will be in the form of finance. He can very well bless you with good health. Nonetheless, thank you all for speaking into my life. I will hold these words true. Again, wishing the lovely couple many happy returns. I was glad to be able to help make your day as special. If I can do my duty, as a good man ought, If I can bring back beauty, to a world up wrought, If I can spread loves message, as the Master taught, Then my living shall not be in vain.
