So, it was pointed out to me that poverty and insecurity are costly, that eventually those who have power will realize that its in their own interest to change things. I thought this was missing a pretty vital aspect of the whole thing, the real payoff, the real value in this whole arrangement. The thing is, poverty and insecurity may be more costly for us all in one way, but it does make available for sale the most valuable of all commodities. Human subservience. Even for those who are not in poverty, and who have a bit of fallback, the existence of it makes us all a little more desperate, more hungry. Which makes us pliable. It gives us -drive- And for those near the bottom, that desperation is almost perfectly coercive. Desperation and coercion, motivation and drive... all swimming about in a cultural stew that leaves us all not only forced to serve, but makes it so most of us dont even question it. Not only do we ask How High? when told to jump, we dont even skip a beat. We try to outdo each other in who can answer the fastest and the most eagerly, in who can follow those instructions most perfectly, no matter how petty or absurd. And we are -thankful-. We beg for the opportunity to serve. Oh please sir, give me this opportunity to serve your every little whim, no matter how petty, stupid, absurd or demeaning. I promise that I wont let you down! Ill serve you the best. ...Because I really need this job
