So its 2am and Im done programming for the night...So I figure what the hell and go for Day 2 of the 100 day song challenge.. The Story: Day 02: A song from the first album you ever bought. (what was the album?) Well this should be easy. I know my first album was an Australian compilation album on cassette. Ive told people how it had Dire Straits and Genesis on it... so I go to look it up, and find out it came out in 78...no.. that wasnt my first album...so I search back via google.. I find another..yes, this was it.. great it has Peter Gabriels first release of Solsbury Hill on it - I love that song!... only as I tax my brain I remember that one was a gift... no... first album I BOUGHT.. so I sit and search and tax my memory some more... and I find it. Explosive Hits 75 and oh my god, it is a thing of horror...It is the very mouth of madness. Even as far as compilation albums go, this is indescribable.. We start with the Bay City Rollers, then along the way AC DC ends up wedged between Al Martino and Linda Ronstadt. Its like they filled a bingo machine with the names of trending Australian, US, and UK artists and just spat out 16 and said DONE. But on the second side of this horrible hodge-podge of pap and mediocrity is a song that stands out from the rest... It sticks out like a sore thumb - its not even rock, and yet sitting here today I remember playing it on a beat up tape deck over and over... the only one on there that would probably stand the test of time, and the only one on there with any meaning whatsoever.. In short, the only song worth a damn. How it got there Ill never know, but now I guess I can at least lie and say I bought it for that song and save myself some shame. https://youtube/watch?v=5Z91n5Vskjg Have you seen the old man In the closed-down market Kicking up the paper, with his worn out shoes? In his eyes you see no pride Hand held loosely at his side Yesterdays paper telling yesterdays news Chorus: So how can you tell me youre lonely, And say for you that the sun dont shine? Let me take you by the hand and lead you through the streets of London Show you something to make you change your mind Have you seen the old girl Who walks the streets of London Dirt in her hair and her clothes in rags? Shes no time for talking, She just keeps right on walking Carrying her home in two carrier bags. Chorus In the all night cafe At a quarter past eleven, Same old man sitting there on his own Looking at the world Over the rim of his teacup, Each tea lasts an hour And he wanders home alone Chorus Have you seen the old man Outside the Seamans Mission Memory fading with the medal ribbons that he wears In our winter city, The rain cries a little pity For one more forgotten hero And a world that doesnt care Read more: Ralph McTell - Streets Of London Lyrics | MetroLyrics
