So, its been twenty years since Kurt Cobain killed himself. I remember coming home from Derby on Friday--since thats when they announced his death--turning on MTV, and hearing Kurt Loders monotone announcing his death. I was stunned, and--in retrospect, this is pretty selfish--I felt gypped. This guy was puffed up to be the voice of my generation; he was meant to provide us with a dozen more albums before bloating up and becoming irrelevant. Instead, he bucked his appointed role in the worst possible way, and we had to make do with Eddie Vedder, a miserable substitute by any metric. To quote the great poet and philosopher Johnny Rotten, ever get the feeling youve been cheated? What people forget about Cobain is that he was extremely pithy and witty. Take the opening lines to Serve the Servants, the first track off In Utero, and perhaps my favorite Nirvana tune: Teenage angst has paid off well/Now Im bored and old. What a great couplet.
