So its bloody hot for October. A wonderful high pressure system - TopicsExpress

So its bloody hot for October. A wonderful high pressure system has fallen atop us and is giving us all this glorious sunshine and warm temps. Hit over 75 yesterday. This is great and all for those of us clinging to summer. Especially since the forecast 6 weeks out is calling for snow up high! But it sucks for fishing. It sucks sucker fish for sure. With the super low water the water temps of the Yakima have gone up considerably. Topping out around 61 yesterday in the upper river and around 62 in the lower stretches. This will put fish down for sure. The high pressure alone will put fish down, but with sunshine and warmer water temps fish are getting fairly stressed and insect hatches will stop if the water temps are too high. If you cant help yourself like me and need to get some fishing in limit your times of fishing to early morning before sunlight hits the water surface and the evenings, when the sun goes down. The water temps will still be high in the evening so focus your attention on deep pools and oxygenated water for fish. Be ready to nymph too. Light line it with single small nymphs to produce fish and be prepared to be skunked or only catch a handful of fish. It may be a good week to hit lakes in the evening. Cooper is a good bet in the evening as the Browns get ready to spawn. Upper stretches of the rivers and creeks that are still open are also a good bet as water temps will drop the higher in elevation you go. This high pressure isnt going anywhere this week so get your waders out and hit it in the mornings and evening and take the afternoon for a nap or some fly tying sessions.
