So, last month I bought this 87T in western MA - about a block from Peter Lyons house. It was the ugliest 900 Id ever seen. The PO painted the entire (formerly Malachite) car this single stage green that looked like Kermit the Frog with some sort of bad VD. Anyway. There was/is more fish-eye and ugly in the paint than I can begin to describe. Anyway, I bought it as a winter car & figured Id do a little work on it in the cold months & see what I could do. Oh yeah, when I say he painted the car - I mean he painted everything - wiper blades, bumpers, door handles, gas cap, moldings, licence plate lights, everything but the glass - seriously. The wheels were spray painted bronze along with the brand new Blizzak snow tires. It was a clown car. The thing was, he took 3 cars and put them together to make this one. Motor trans from one, Mint body thatd only been driven for 5 years from another. The guy invested about $8-$10K in this thing and when his 20 something girlfriend wanted a rock on her finger - he fire-saled all his toys. This car has a new suspension, brakes, exhaust, etc. Anyway, I drove down with my best friend & he said there were some spare parts; Im like Cool! He had a GARAGE full of parts. Fresh 5-Speed & motor (loaded in the back of this car for the drive back to NY - Hey, those Billsteins are AWESOME) Anyway, he sunk a lot of money in it but he wasnt a mechanic, so Ive been fixing a lot of WEIRD stuff. Parts mounted upside down & held in place w/ zip ties etc. Anyway, Ive been bummed b/c its got a redbox (Oh yeah, came w/ like 3 other APC black boxes along with enough spare parts to fill a 12 Jetta Sportwagen.) So, I finally relented today & unplugged the vac hose to the waste-gate actuator just to make sure I didnt have a bad turbo - took it around the block. HOLY-HELL! The car ran like a scalded cat. Quickly back to the house to reconnect the hose. At least I know its a good turbo - Good? Yesssss, very good. It came w/ an extra turbo or two but at least I know now that I probably just have to adjust the rod or something simple. Dear God! Just in time for winter, A 900 Turbo thatll kill me. This has got to be the most obscenely fast turbo Ive had in over a decade & Im using it for a winter rat. Ive already done the custom stereo work, started on the bumpers, doing a nice headliner and all the other touches I do on my cars. It really is a fantastic car - I just have to make the paint less ugly & I think the 1/4 air dams contrasting grey & back trim will help with that. Still have yet to get better than 25 mpg. Switching over to Mobil 1. 1st couple of oil changes have been at 500, 1000, and 2000 with regular high quality - I think Pennzoil high detergent, I dont know the complete history of the motor but I have a ton of documentation going back to new.
