So, last night I attended a Womens Faculty Reception, where I realized just how many music, theater and dance faculty there are at UNT. So, I engaged a music composition professor in conversation: Me: So what are you teaching this semester? Her: I LOVE this class, its classical composition, 1960 and beyond (or something close to that). Me: Cool. What distinguishes the differences in that era, over, say, the previous 20-40 years? Her: [Enter in five minutes of dialogue, underwritten with words like streams, cosmic, unilateral, contrasts, reverse streams supported with full-on body language and her standing on her toes to make points.] Me: Wow. Im glad you really love that. Youre a second year faculty member? Her: YES. Me: So, if you were to compose a song that embodied the experience of being a second-year faculty member what would it include? Her: I like to think of my compositions as only having two instruments - the piano, and the FULL ORCHESTRA. Me: Also cool... Her: The orchestra is playing one of my piece this Spring at their concert! Me: OKAY. I DO plan on going to some of their concerts; Ill watch for your work. [She moves on...] Me thinking to myself: I wonder if Im THAT excited about relationships, marriage, romantic partnerships, etc? Sometimes. But Im not sure all the time. I must think on this...
