So last night I watched the movie Selma. Ive been very vocal about my desire not to see it due to the fact that I felt like the movie, the message and the timing of its release was constructed to pacify my people. I was set in my decision. But my King wanted to watch it, so I watched it too. And I was surprised. It was a very moving film...and was almost the exact opposite of what I thought it would be. How I felt after watching it was almost the exact opposite of how I thought it would make feel. There were certain parts I had to give the side-eye too...like when they were talking about the Sheriff in Selma and King said He wont go down without a fight, but we dont fight...that made me cringe...but those parts were few and far in between. I do wish that other chapters of our history would be portrayed on the big screen. Something other than having non-violence forced down our throats everywhere we turn. I do like the fact that they included Malcolm X into the film because although I am more of a militant mind like X was...I do overstand that for the movement BOTH factions were needed. The movement would not have been as successful without the peaceful fighters and the militant fighters. I would love to see more movies on Malcolm X or the Black Panthers or even the REAL ancient Egyptians...but that doesnt take from the fact that Selma was a very good movie...it was inspiring, enlightening and empowering....Im glad I saw it.
