So last night as I enjoyed my snack at Tyber Creek Pub I took in a little people watching. I noticed there was a moderately attractive woman in her mid twenties wearing a casual romper at the end of the bar. Every guy at the bar waiting for a beer struck up a conversation with her. She was obviously a popular regular. Armchair anthropologist that I am, I observed her behavior and listened to her conversation. She laughed as if everything each guy said was the funniest thing shed ever heard. While she wasnt completely inarticulate, her vocabulary seemed to consist primarily of three phrases Oh my gosh!, HUH-uh!, and Seriously? After about fifteen minutes I watched an average looking guy in his mid thirties chat her up only to be shot down. A few minutes later he sidled up and sat down in the empty chair next to me, clearly he was there hoping to meet women. He struck up a small talk type conversation. I was not interested, but I am a people person, so I will talk to anyone. The guy worked for Bank of America (big surprise), seemed to think because Id lived near Knoxville I must like football and Peyton Manning (How much do you love that guy?), and had never heard of burlesque. It was quite clear I wasnt interested, but he continued to talk to me anyway, probably out of curiousity. After about a ten minute conversation I asked him what made him approach the girl at the end of the bar first. His response, I could tell by looking youre, like, way smarter than me and probably totally out of my league. I replied, Thank you. Moral of the story, Id rather be myself by myself than dumb myself down or dress myself down to be more approachable.
