So last night we watched The Butler. What a way to ruin a perfectly good Saturday night! First off, the casting was horrible. Robin Williams as Dwight Eisenhower? John Cusack as Richard Nixon? Alan Professor Snape Rickman as Ronald Reagan, and Hanoi Jane Fonda as his wife Nancy? Are you KIDDING me? Casting aside, in spite of Oprahs involvement, the first half of the movie was fairly non-partisan, perhaps because all the horrible people doing horrible things to black folks were Democrats, but then it REALLY jumped the shark with the completely mendacious claim that Ronald Reagan supported apartheid. That isnt even the usual liberal sophistry. That is an outright LIE. Then came the scene where Ronald Reagan allegedly confesses to his butler, Cecil Gaines, that he may have been wrong on race relations. That was when I actually yelled, About WHAT!? at the television, but was never provided with an answer. I should have turned if off right then and there, but I didnt, and then I learned why the casting of every President was so piss poor. The movie ends by vomiting undeserved praise upon Our Dear Leader, who is never shown, and therefore couldnt also be horribly miscast. Save your money and spare yourself the aggravation!
