So last time when we had the 1st gathering of 70; it may be the genesis of the Sanhedrin or at least the Sanhedrin took their model after this passage, having 71 people representing Moses (or the high priest) & the 70 to rule as if they were both Senate and the Supreme Court. Course now i am wondering why i know the word Sanhedrin, seeing as how i cant find it in the bible lol. Maybe there is a mention of it & maybe it came about after the bible was written or if during, it is like the apocrypha & unimportant/ optional (imo) to the bible story. Well one reason why i would know about it is that many people speculate that Paul was a member of it (before he converted) because it appears that during Acts 7:58 he was the authority that caused Stephen to get stoned (even if it says he was young at the time). Num 11:24 And Moses went out, and told the people the words of the LORD, and gathered the seventy men of the elders of the people, and set them round about the tabernacle. 25 And the LORD came down in a cloud, and spake unto him, and took of the spirit that was upon him, and gave it unto the seventy elders: and it came to pass, that, when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied, and did not cease. 26 But there remained two of the men in the camp, the name of the one was Eldad, and the name of the other Medad: and the spirit rested upon them; and they were of them that were written, but went not out unto the tabernacle: and they prophesied in the camp. 27 And there ran a young man, and told Moses, and said, Eldad and Medad do prophesy in the camp. 28 And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of Moses, one of his young men, answered and said, My lord Moses, forbid them. 29 And Moses said unto him, Enviest thou for my sake? would God that all the LORD’S people were prophets, and that the LORD would put his spirit upon them! 30 And Moses gat him into the camp, he and the elders of Israel. So here Moses goes & tells the people what YHVH said in the last section & gathered 70 men who were leaders of the people and after setting them in order around the tabernacle, YHVH manifested in a cloud so if this is part of the cloud manifestation that is always over the tabernacle during the day as it is still, or another cloud manifestation is unclear - what is clear is that YHVH speaks to Moses from within the cloud and shared the anointing or Holy Spirit that was upon Moses with the 70. As soon as God did that the 70 started prophesying for the next long time as it said they didnt stop. So as it happened 2 of the 70 were not by the tabernacle but in the camp also prophesying & one was named Eldad = “God has loved” & the other Medad = “love” - it says they went not up but doesnt say why, it does say that they belonged to the 70 as Moses had a list written, so why they didnt make their appointment at the tabernacle is unwritten, but i am guessing that they were fulfilling Jn 3:8 & were where God wanted them to be because of how the section goes - Someone ran up & told Moses that Eldad & Medad were prophesying in the camp & Joshua, Moses right hand man besides Aaron said Moses you gotta stop them (like they could control what God was doing among them) - Moses responds Are you envious: 7065 קָנָא [qana’ /kaw·naw/] v. A primitive root; TWOT 2038; GK 7861; 33 occurrences; AV translates as “jealous” 10 times, “envy” nine times, “jealousy” five times, “envious” four times, “zealous” twice, “very” twice, and “zeal” once. 1 to envy, be jealous, be envious, be zealous. 1a (Piel). 1a1 to be jealous of. 1a2 to be envious of. 1a3 to be zealous for. 1a4 to excite to jealous anger. 1b (Hiphil) to provoke to jealous anger, cause jealousy. - for my sake? (basically are you so zealous that you want to make sure they obey what i told them to do {stand around the tabernacle} while they are busy obeying what God told them to do {prophesy}?) I pray that all of Gods people would prophesy & that God would put His spirit upon them! - after this Moses & the elders go & follow Eldad & Medad into the camp & spread Gods words to the people. In any case this almost same scenario plays out again in the NT here in Mk 9:38 And John answered him, saying, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name, and he followeth not us: and we forbad him, because he followeth not us. 39 But Jesus said, Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my name, that can lightly speak evil of me. 40 For he that is not against us is on our part. So this section is telling me a few things: 1) It may be possible to disobey your pastor while you are obeying God (They were told to go to the tabernacle & didnt make it; nevertheless were doing what God wanted them to be doing {prophesying}) 2) It is not necessary to micro-manage a project of God if God did not give you express instructions to do so (Like with the case of Ithmar being told to give each job of carrying each item to whoever he saw fit) 3) Sometimes God moves in ways we do not expect; go with it (After Moses realized that God wanted the people in the camp to hear these prophecies, he & the rest of the 70 went closer to the people among the camp) 4) Just because they are not with us doesnt mean they are not with God (If someone is truly working for God than it doesnt matter what if any building they attend, so dont be surprised when you meet someone who works for God & doesnt go to your church) 5) So dont try to hog God so to speak & keep Him only for yourself but share Him with everyone you can (Heb 3:13a But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day - so dont discourage people who want to serve God, but rather lift them up & support them) 6) Praying for more people to be touched by God & used by Him is a good idea (would God that all the LORD’S people were prophets, and that the LORD would put his spirit upon them!) So we might as well take a look at a couple passages before it is time to move on - 1 Cor 14:1 Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy. 2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries. 3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort. 4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church. - So would that all of Gods people were prophets so that they could speak to each other for edification & exhortation & comfort. & the other one is from Rev 19:10b the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy. - So there is a good chance that during this section the 70 were prophesying among other things about their future Messiah. Oh how i would love to be a fly on the wall & hear those unwritten prophesies of our Lord Jesus! Oh well it is just as well seeing as how Mt 13:17 For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them. - There were a lot of people that wished they could know what we know about God & didnt before they died. Well even though the final section of the chapter is short; i have been talking for a while, so i will save it for next time. Heh i told you todays section was powerful; what do you think?
