So...lets return to September 23rd when some of you may remember the RAC recovered me and my van to Liphook for repairs after it failed to carry me further than Guildford before falling very sick indeed. Upon arrival I got my HP2 1200 Enduro out of the van, as planned all along, and set off to do some of the green lanes around Hindhead which I havent ridden for years, on the way home. I had a thoroughly enjoyable bimble around the Devils Punchbowl and on the challenging sandy byway across Frensham Common before getting back on the A3 at Milford and heading for home. Unfortunately my journey was interrupted just past Ripley Services when I lost all drive to the rear wheel. The engine was still going brmm brmm, the gears were still working and the drive shaft was still turning. But something in the bevel box in the rear wheel was well and truly broken. Cue another call to the RAC and my second recovery in a single day, with two completely different vehicles! Thats the first time thats happened to me in three decades of membership! Embarrassed? I most certainly was! Fortunately I had a standard R1200GS bevel box in the garage from my rear wheel bearing problem 3 years ago,. Yesterday I fitted it and everything seems to be working OK again, although Ive only ridden it a couple of miles around the block so far. The problem with the standard GS bevel box is that the speedo wire isnt compatible with the HP2s CanBUS system but yesterday afternoon, after much circuit testing and fiddling with lots of different wires and connectors I finally managed to get my Garmin Zumo 550 to take juice from the HP2 so I have both a working speed indicator and a GPS with streetmap running off the bikes alternator. Hurrah! I rewarded myself by splashing out a massive £1.39 on a wholemeal chicken tikka sandwich from the local petrol station but I didnt eat it until Id been for a 5 mile jog with the local running club which, frankly, was a bit of a struggle, but Im glad I did it. Washed down in the bath with Sainsburys own brand beer, which is actually better than you might imagine! This little tale of woe is particularly for Philip Gunn, John Mitchinson, Adam Atkins, Jason Markos, Pat Keenan, and Darren Hodgson. And Roger Wood, who may recognise the bottom of the lane in the first snap! News of the stricken van to follow.....
