So lets talk Gone Girl. David Fincher is... I dont want to say at the top of the directing game right now. Lets just say hes on the 92 Olympics Mens Basketball Dream Team of directors in the game right now. Hes on the squad. This is a tight thriller with twists and turns from beginning right to the very last frame. Not new territory for Fincher (Seven, Panic Room, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), but what he brings to the table this time around is what his previous entry severely lacked: humor. This movie is seriously funny. And it helps that the screenwriter who transposed Gillian Flynns tale of marriage, false faces, and finding the truth was none other than Flynn herself. For those of you who havent had the pleasure of reading the novel, try and hit it up before you watch Finchers take. Its a pretty faithful adaptation, but the book fully fleshes out the dual perspective of the not-so-happy couple of Nick and Amy Dunne. One of my pet peeves is trying to explain to the majority of the people that I talk shop with is that Ben Affleck is a truly gifted actor. Sure, many of his roles seem like hes just playing the same guy in different situations, but cmon. There is such a thing as subtlety in a performance. Just because you dont like the guy doesnt mean hes lacking in the talent department. This is just another title I can add to the list of fantastic Ben Affleck performances. Rosamund Pike deserves every available award for her Amazing Amy. Thats all I can really say to those who are unfamiliar with the story. She just nails the girl gone. Supporting cast is fantastic. Having not seen Patrick Fugit on the big screen in a looong time (hes the lead in my all-time favorite, Almost Famous), it was nice to watch him as one half of the detective team investigating Nick and the disappearance. Kim Dickens is wonderful as the other half, and truly shines in the back half of the film. For those of you who want to see Tyler Perry be not god-awful, here you go. He nails the cocky defense attorney. Maybe he should just stick to supporting roles in other peoples movies. Also, creepy Neil Patrick Harris is something I prefer in small doses, like in this movie. Hopefully he keeps the creep-factor on the back burner for a while. As always, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross create an amazing score. These guys should just record background music for my day-to-day. Gone Girl is a fantastic movie that may or may not strike up a conversation about relationships and the intent behind them. It will definitely resonate some passion inside the viewer. Having just left a screening, Im still shaking off my emotions. As always, David Fincher can do no wrong. Go watch this movie.
