So… light rail. I often wondered what’s the difference between doing it” with buses vs light rail. I spent some years in Quito, Ecuador which has a dedicated busway, which is indistinguishable from light rail as far as I can tell. So… why not replace the Newcastle truncated train line with buses (technically “bus rapid transit”) where they’re treated as if they’re trams/light rail? Would be much more cost effective, I imagine.
