So lots of people are aware that Sharon gave Shirley a kidney 24 years ago yesterday. Most of us have donated something at one time or another. Maybe canned food, some money, time, or even blood. Its an unselfish act, but usually no more than a minor inconvenience. What Sharon did was much more. Imagine what a disruption to your life it would be to take a month or so off work not to do something enjoyable, but undergo a major invasive surgery when youre perfectly healthy. Donate is such a gentle word. In reality the surgery was brutal. They sliced her from her belly button around to her spine. Then laid her on her side on a special table that hinged in the middle to crack her open. They sawed off a rib to gain access to the kidney that would become Shirleys. The surgery almost never took place because Shirley was so sick they were afraid she might not survive it. She was constantly vomiting and had terrible headaches from the poisons in her system which her kidneys were not filtering. After the surgery it was as if they had switched bodies. Shirley was alert and alive and full of energy. Sharon was moaning in pain and pumping her morphine button. What a sacrifice! She is a true hero!
