So many ironies. The Tyburn Convent (see previous post) was established by Mother Marie Adele Garnier (1838-1924), who had founded the Adorers of the Sacred Heart of Jesus of Montmartre OSB in 1898. What brought her to England was persecution of the Church in France at the beginning of the twentieth century, as a result of which she and her community fled across the channel in 1901. For centuries Catholics had had to flee Britain in the face of persecution, for centuries Continental Catholic countries had provided a place of refuge for them, and now the wheel had turned full circle. But in fact this was not the first time French Catholics had taken refuge here, for the same had happened during the French Revolution, and some suggest that the appearance of numbers of Catholic priests over here played a significant part in the development of the Church in the UK and also perhaps in the emergence of the Anglo-Catholic movement.
