So many love the sound of this song (as do I), but do people pay - TopicsExpress

So many love the sound of this song (as do I), but do people pay attention to the lyrics? I have heard more than one Christian song artist sing this song as part of their repertoire but should it be? Below you will find the words as they were written and sung by Leonard Cohen: LEONARD COHEN LYRICS Hallelujah Ive heard there was a secret chord That David played, and it pleased the Lord But you dont really care for music, do you? It goes like this The fourth, the fifth The minor fall, the major lift The baffled king composing Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Your faith was strong but you needed proof You saw her bathing on the roof Her beauty in the moonlight overthrew you She tied you to a kitchen chair She broke your throne, and she cut your hair And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Baby I have been here before I know this room, Ive walked this floor I used to live alone before I knew you. Ive seen your flag on the marble arch Love is not a victory march Its a cold and its a broken Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah There was a time when you let me know Whats really going on below But now you never show it to me, do you? And remember when I moved in you The holy dove was moving too And every breath we drew was Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Maybe there’s a God above But all I’ve ever learned from love Was how to shoot at someone who outdrew you It’s not a cry you can hear at night It’s not somebody who has seen the light It’s a cold and it’s a broken Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah You say I took the name in vain I dont even know the name But if I did, well, really, whats it to you? Theres a blaze of light in every word It doesnt matter which you heard The holy or the broken Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah I did my best, it wasnt much I couldnt feel, so I tried to touch Ive told the truth, I didnt come to fool you And even though it all went wrong Ill stand before the Lord of Song With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah Okay, so a person says, wow, he talks about Biblical figures, hes singing hallelujah, surely hes a believer, and surely this song could be worship to the Creator of the Heavens and the Earth. No. Look closer, think clearly, is this a man of faith singing praises to the Lord? No, this is not a holy hallelujah it is a broken hallelujah not even claiming faith in God but rather stating clearly that the singer doesnt even know if there is a God. Then there is the aspect of focusing on the fall of David and Samson through lust. Then there is this section: There was a time when you let me know Whats really going on below But now you never show it to me, do you? And remember when I moved in you The holy dove was moving too And every breath we drew was Hallelujah Who is the singer singing to? Clearly not the Lord as shown by how the song starts: Ive heard there was a secret chord That David played, and it pleased the Lord But you dont really care for music, do you? And what of this: You say I took the name in vain I dont even know the name But if I did, well, really, whats it to you? Theres a blaze of light in every word It doesnt matter which you heard The holy or the broken Hallelujah But even if the singer took the name in vain whats it to you? It doesnt matter if you heard the broken or holy hallelujah? Uh? What? As much as I am tempted to sing along (because the tune is so beautiful sounding) the song is not one any follower of Christ should sing.
