So many of my friends know that I make my own dog food for my pooches. they go crazy for it and the Vet says they are uber healthy dogs. I did it because they had food allergies and itchy skin, its the only thing that solved it. Ive been giving serious thought to turning it into a side business, but to do that Id need to find a commercial kitchen that would let me cook in volume. Im just in the thinking the steps thru stage and figuring out my unit costs, etc. The dog food is like a porridge, I give them one big scoop in the morning and one at night. The ingredients are simple: Whole chicken (including skin and fat), peas, lentils, oats, yams, and carrots all cooked down to a mush. its about 40% protein and 60% carbs, GOOD carbs, not corn or wheat. Im pretty sure I would sell it by the pound in large industrial freezer bags. You keep it in the freezer and thaw out what you need for that week. it would cost more (not a ton more, but more) than regular dog food, but regular dog food is full of bad stuff for your dogs like GMO grains and food colorings and chemicals and fillers. Dog owners - would that appeal to you, a home made all natural dog food product? Would it make sense to you to pay a bit more but to know that everything your dog is consuming is all natural?
