So many people complain about Facebook and using the Internet in - TopicsExpress

So many people complain about Facebook and using the Internet in general but I feel like it adds a lot of value that goes unnoticed. If I had Facebook in high school I probably would have known so much more about my classmates (especially shy ones), I could have seen more depth in them, and I probably would have found some people that I didnt realize were really cool (and vice versa.) I think Facebook gives us better depth and breadth in terms of understanding people. Without Facebook I wouldnt have seen anywhere near as much of the important pictures, good and bad news, relationships, and just general depth about my family in Iceland that I have seen over the last few years. I genuinely feel closer to them than I would without it and some of them I havent talked to in months or even years and a phone call could never convey as much information as all of the pictures, comments from their friends, and status updates that I read every day. Its great to see what peoples lives are like today, even if they were just acquaintances. Some of those acquaintances have super interesting lives and post pictures from all over the world and make me feel a little bit more vicariously cultured. You might argue that peoples posts dont always reflect who they are or what their life is like but I think thats ok too. If somebody posts negative things, people complain that they are always whining and if people post the positive things in their life people complain that they are bragging or inflating the quality of their life, and sterile posts like funny memes, cool videos, interesting articles, and pictures of peoples kids are considered junk. The majority of what you can post wont please most people, but all of it, including what it is exactly that you decide to share with people, tells a lot about you regardless of how accurately it describes your day to day. Facebook stalking aside, what a great way to keep a multimedia diary of your entire life in one place. I hope that when I am 80 years old I can open up Facebook and relive all of the best moments I had over my life with video, pictures, status updates, and even commentary from people that I used to know. Even just the Internet in general. There is an enormous amount of junk online but its honestly amazing how endless the good content really is! I can spend hours on StumbleUpon and the last few nights I have been reading up on random historical events over the years. Have you ever heard about vice president Burr killing Hamilton in a duel... and then he just kept on being vice president!! Thats some gangster s*** America! So if I am in line at the bank, or there is a lull in conversation and I look down at my phone I feel no guilt. I am socializing with, learning about, and keeping in touch with hundreds of people and learning more about the world around me than I did in high school which I think is a far better excuse for stealing my attention than watching a TV show or a Movie or even reading a good book.
