So many people have forgotten that economic growth is beneficial only to the extent that it serves the needs of the population - its not a goal in itself. In todays world, far from bringing prosperity, growing populations and economies are creating systemic instabilities, serious environmental problems and making livelihoods riskier. Taiwan is likely to begin to experience negative population growth in 2020, posing an imminent threat to Taiwans economic development. Because population growth is a prerequisite for economic growth, many countries and territories are taking positive steps to keep their populations growing. Among them are Hong Kong and Singapore.
