So many thanks to all our fans and friends, for your continued support. As colder weather draws near and Satan continues to live in his small lot with his two friends I am reminded often that I get to see him closely everyday because he has no choice to retreat any further. He has no grass beneath his feet and not much space to stretch his legs. Ive noticed sometimes hes reluctant to buck with the others during playtime and rarely seems to be actually enjoying himself. I have brought home a relatives horse that partially degloved his leg and it needs rewrapping frequently, which takes time after I get home from work while I take advantage of the sitter and before scaring up something to eat. Long story short the weather is about to get annoying and time is always short, the grass around here is not over abundant and I think Satan would enjoy some pasture time. He could also use more food than his dry lot friends but it is hard to separate him twice a day to feed him different hay or more food. Injured horse is living in the arena when its dry because its flat and free of debris and other horses, he can move around and keep the swelling down. Satan could live in my small pasture with my yearling filly who has to be fed separately from the big mares for her PSSM. In fact, many horses show a positive difference when started on supplements for PSSM wether they have it or not so he could benefit from eating what she eats. I could get him back to the arena or the barn if needed for deworming or to catch him for any necessary medical treatment but living in a spacious place, seeing people at least twice a day and not feeling like its forced could be very good for him. Its not like he could get much more flighty or evasive and if its not working out for his best interest I can always go back to a smaller enclosure. This isnt about cranking out results for an audience, this is about whats good for the ponys brain in the long term. Maybe he can hit the reset button a little while hes out, and his yearling friend Caroline is the most people-oriented attention-mongering animal on the property, he could learn a thing or two. She certainly never takes a clue from flighty or nervous horses shes pastured with. Im sure many of you will be unhappy about this but just like catching him in his vacation spot, sometimes you have to do whats best for you both. I couldnt care less about any kind of agendas or deadlines, I have none. I will let you know how it goes every time Im in the pasture, and update with photos of him enjoying himself. Perhaps work on small-low pressure things like just getting two eyes when I ask for them, or if Im lucky enough to get the luxury of an afternoon free I can go read (and poke Caroline when she smothers me) or just lead her around and make his friend more of my friend for an hour. Little things. I want to take some of the panic away, without being cooped up in a tiny space, so we can all breathe and worry less. Less entertainment for the masses perhaps, but that was never the focus of taking this pony. Some fresher air and grazing and space can sometimes heal a lot of wounds on the soul.
