So many times we have discussed how babies are born hard-wired for social interactions and the importance of a bonded relationship between baby and at least one caregiver. Human babies seek out interactions with other humans, not just their parents, but also strangers! This particular phenomenon was studied by Dr. Edward Tronick, who actually looked at what happens when babies do not receive the give and take that should naturally occur from a caregiver. Take a look a this video clip and watch how a bonded mother-baby relationship changes when the mother suddenly stops interacting and only shows the baby a Still Face. You can clearly see the babys stress levels increasing by watching her cues/behaviors. This was tested over and over with several mothers and babies, with much of the same result. The take-away? Look at your baby, talk to your baby, interact with your baby! If you arent able to do so, it is imperative that another caregiver be present to do so. This is especially important in situations when mothers are suffering from postpartum depression, or have a traumatic or stressful situation that prevents them from being able to engage and bond with their babies. Fathers, partners, grandparents, or other family/friends can step in to support mothers in these situations and provide the continuous engagement and interaction to support a babys healthy social and emotional development. https://youtube/watch?v=apzXGEbZht0
