So many times we have people call us or stop in (with no experience) who say they want to compete. This always makes us a little iffy because unless youve actually trained for a fight, you have no idea how intensely demanding the sport is - physically and mentally. Maybe it sounds cool, maybe it makes the person feel better about themselves or maybe they really THINK they want to compete. Either way, this is the reason the sport doesnt thrive like it should. Too many gyms allow anyone who can take a beating or appear to be tough, go on to compete - yet the student really hasnt grasped the sport and art. Amateur boxing is the foundation, the starting point for new boxers to learn the sport. Putting the cart before the horse (learn to box while you compete) is not what we stand for. When you step into the ring, win or lose, you will be a good boxer and represent our gym/training well. You dont walk onto a football team and immediately start. You learn, you get in shape, you try it out to see if you can even handle it, you work your way up...THEN you will know if competition is for you. Try learning first, sparring second, then think about competition. You, and the sport, will be better because of that...and youll enjoy the ride much more! Sorry for the rant...
