So maybe Im the last one to read This is Water, a commencement speech by David Foster Wallace, but I love it. It reflects something I truly believe, that although we may have little control of how reality unfolds around us, *most* of us have total control over how we react to it. I recognize the sad irony that Wallace battle depression his whole, short life, and that he likely did NOT have the final say in how his brain reacted to life. To me, that just makes it all the more impressive an insight and a perfect commencement speech. Reading the original is probably best (web.ics.purdue.edu/~drkelly/DFWKenyonAddress2005.pdf), but there are lots of edited, video presentations of the speech. This one maintains most of the essence...but is still missing something, IMO.
