So most of my FB friends know I coach wrestling for Cypress High in California. You probably also know I don’t share much about my team on my FB page. We have a Cypress Wrestling FB site for that. But as I approach my 23rd year of coaching, I have to admit I am a little depressed…. Last year one of my former wrestlers got kicked off his college team for doing “stupid” things. Last spring one of my senior wrestlers got kicked out of school one month before graduation. This year so far, my only returning league champion didn’t come out because he’s got a job. One of my top returning wrestlers decided to move so he could go to a private school with a great wrestling team. Then we have the injuries, my 220lber broke and dislocated his ankle in football, and he had surgery, out for 6 months. My 195lber can’t wrestler anymore because of a blood condition. And yesterday, my only returning CIF placer broke a metacarpal in his hand in a preseason tourney and is out for 6-8 weeks. I am not one to cry in my beer; as a matter of fact I haven’t had a beer this year. But all this has gotten me a bit down. I know in the scheme of things it all works out and there are a lot more important things going on in the world. I just haven’t felt this way before a season! On the bright side, I have 80 kids on the roster and expect another 15 or so from football and water polo. I also have 12 girls wrestling. The kids that are in the room are working extremely hard. This season is going to be interesting. There is no clear preseason pick for league champion. We are young and inexperienced, but by February we will be older and seasoned!! Thanks for letting me vent.
