So most of my facebook friends know that I’m a full time, full custody dad. God did not give me the natural inherit motherly instincts that most women have. In fact it might be safe to say that I started this process needing “special” help and that I lack even the most common abilities that mothers and fathers have. Well I finally won a major battle today with my oldest son! Getting my kids to eat anything remotely healthy has been a nightmare. To add insult to injury I’m not really good at planning a health meal nor do I have the time, so when I actually do cook an amazing meal it’s met with great rejection! I took a different route today as I just wasn’t feeling like getting stressed out or angry. I decided on making a hamburger soup with lots of veggies, lean ground sirloin for protein, and a tomato/beef stock base. I added all of the dried spices I could from my garden and put a little extra time into chopping the carrots/potatoes. My oldest walks in, sees it, and says “Nope, there’s no way I’m eating that”. I wanted to lose it, but I said a quick prayer in my head and responded by saying “This is for your brother and I. You’re welcome to try some, but feel free to make anything you’d like.” He did and man he put a lot of work into it. He decided upon fried chicken breasts which he burned, had to wash a bunch of dishes, spilled oil on the floor, caught the pan on fire, and all the while he’s able to see the delicious healthy soup simmering next to him and me on the couch watching TV. I wanted to jump up and control the situation, but I didnt. As he was putting the blackened breasts onto his bread, he asked me humbly to make an extra bowl just in case. He’s just finished his third bowl! It’s hard but sometimes as parents we have to let our kids fail so that we can guide them properly to think and learn for themselves.
