So much going on right now, exciting and worrisome all at the same time. The good news bad news has arrived on the arena/curling rink. The ammonia is definitely leaking into the memorial arena so it will be shut down for the remainder of the year. (dammit) would like to use worse language. Installation of ice and getting ready for that is underway now at the EnCana Event Centre. It will take a few weeks to ready up, hiring staff etc, so anticipating early January opening of Encana Event Centre ice facility. The event centre is not operated by the city, but by Global Spectrum so we are working with Ryan and his staff to get this done. The Xmas season brings a reduction in ice demand so the next few weeks will continue to be the painful period and the early January we will be back to 2 ice rinks. The curling rink was not leaking ammonia into their system so it will be re-opened on Thursday, that is such good news. The early test results on the arena were promising but unfortunately the leak was showing increasing levels of ammonia so no way to open the rink back up safely😥 Council was sworn in yesterday and we held our first meeting which was basically ceremonial and council appointments. I have added a council assignment this term to Councillor Wilbur for Health. We need to take a more proactive approach working with our local MLA Mike Bernier and the local residents in health care worker attraction and retention to the city. We will develop the criteria and approach thru council so we can get this moving forward. Councillor Wilbur is the best choice (my opinion) to get this moving. Councillor McFayden will take on an additional role with SPCA, with all that is happening for the animal services, I think Terry will be a terrific advocate in this area. We have been doing a whole lot of work around the residential development bylaw. Hopefully it moves forward on December 15, I am very happy with how proactive the community has been on this issue. I forgot to post for the folks on 21 street. I was asked if I could approach BC Hydro about doing some screening, landscaping, etc on the work they are doing across the road from these residents. I did raise it with the Hydro folks who indicated they would review the idea and respond. I recd a very positive note about a week ago that they are following it up so hopefully we can find a way to make it a bit more attractive across the street for the folks living over there. Christmas Season is approaching, please support our local business community.
