So my father has taken Lisinopril - Prinivil, also sold as Zestril, for 18 years. This past Tuesday he had an allergic reaction to it and nearly lost his life. His tongue swelled so bad that it cut off his airway, almost a fatal point. They were barely able to get a breathing tube in so they didnt have to do a tracheotomy. He was sedated for two days till they got the swelling down enough so he could breathe on his own. He is home now and resting well. Should be back to normal in a few days. Im not telling everyone just to tell you, Im telling you because it amazes me that this medication is still handed out to millions of people every day. When the EMTs put him in the ambulance, the first question was NOT, what medications are you taking, it was, ARE you taking Lisinopril? Of course he shook his head yes, and the EMT said yeah we get this quite a bit. How is it that this medication can be sold to people if it is that common for this kind of reaction? Turns out that my Uncle has gone through this as well as a couple others he knows as well! I just dont get it! Is there an acceptable number of fatal reactions to a drug that is given out so often? Im sure the answer is yes. Rant over for now.
