So my official unofficial update on the quake. It was a substantial shake and lasted a long time (40 seconds). A 7.0 (despite people saying 7.5, 7.0 is the official govt report) The center was very close to us, les then 25 miles. Sent us out of the house and the cats were jumping around like rabbits. Some stuff fell off the shelves and a couple of breaks but nothing serious. We were already getting ready to go to Zihuatanejo shopping so we went anyway. There were a few rock slides on the road but nothing serious. When we got to the top of the hill over Ixtapa there were hundreds of people up there in cars and walking around. Apparently false Tsunami rumors. Our first idea that there may be serious damage was the OXXO store in La Puerta. All the windows were broken, one wall was severely damaged and part of the ceiling collapsed. Other buildings there had damage as well. Once in Zihua it was evident people were pretty shook up and it seemed a lot of tourists were leaving. We saw some damaged buildings, not a lot, and collapsed roofs over the sidewalks. Comercial Mexicana (our biggest grocery) was closed. I imagine because of everything falling off the shelves. Sams Club was closed and cordoned off by Civil Protection. This likely means they suffered some structural damage, though how serious I do not know. The only major store open was Bodega. There were long lines at the gas stations waiting for fuel and large groups of people and cars on the roadside, looking a bit confused. Overall I would say the damage is not severe, but neither did we escape unscathed as a community. The next day or so will certainly play out the details...
