So my rudder broke off my B24 while getting towed off the beach (yes Ive been having an eventful winter here in Vic BC), so I figure I mine as well build a new one since theres a full length crack in this one and its generally seen better days. The shaft appears to be a wooden dowel coated in brass which sits in a shoe, then screwed to the edge of the rudder which is a solid wood of some type. Not sure if its the original or if this is a normal setup but Im thinking of getting a buddy to custom weld me a rig similar to Caseys design pictured below. A wooden rudder with a layer or two of glass on it with the appropriate paint, sandwiched by a custom welded setup. Thoughts? Sorry if my terminology is way off.
