So near yet so far from England today, who have lost in the final - TopicsExpress

So near yet so far from England today, who have lost in the final over against Australia in Hobart. Everything went so well for England for the first forty overs: Australia won the toss and bowled, but Moeen and Ian Bell put on 113 in no time at all. Moeen went for 46, swiftly followed by Taylor, but Bell kept going and reached his 4th ODI hundred off 92 balls. He eventually fell for 141, and his innings meant that he has become England’s leading run scorer in ODI cricket. We’ve been trying to reword “Ding Dong Belly” all morning to reflect this, but “He’s scored more runs than Collingwood” doesnt quite work (sorry Colly!). Despite Joe Root’s 69, when Bell departed England couldnt kick on: having been 252-2 off 41 overs, they would have been disappointed to finish on 303-7. That lack of acceleration proved costly for England, as Australia, through Finch and Marsh initially, kept up with the rate. Steve Smith (103*), played an exceptional innings and Brad Haddin scored quickly at the end to see Australia home in the final over. England can take heart from this match in that they didnt produce a complete performance but they still pushed Australia close. Twenty more runs at the end and the game could have been theirs. On a more positive note: we have learnt that as well as being better singers than the Aussie fans, we are also far better fielders! telegraph.co.uk/sport/cricket/international/australia/11364926/Watch-Australian-fan-fall-over-advertising-board-trying-to-field-the-ball-during-ODI-clash-against-England-in-Hobart.html
