So next time you become angry with a woman because she wont file for the restraining order that you think will solve her problems, remind yourself of this story (and the several hundred like it). A piece of paper does nothing to protect someone. All it does is anger the abuser and motivate them to hurt you even more. It may document things, but it does nothing to prevent attacks or protect victims. By the time the police arrive, she is usually already dead. So dont call a woman stupid for not filing a restraining order. You have no idea the kind of fear she lives with...She knows, better than anyone, the consequences of upsetting her abuser. The best protection a woman can have is her own strength, her own courage, her own plan. Whether it be martial arts or a gun, she needs to have a way to defend herself, and especially her children. Because that piece of paper just wont do it.
