So now I’m at the stage I’m always at this close to the beginning of a trip overseas…the stage of wondering how much currency I should order from my bank. I like to travel with as much currency as I think I’ll need for the entire trip, as banks zing you on “currency conversion fees” every time you use a credit or debit card or withdraw money from an ATM. The trick, as always, is figuring out just how much that is. Sometimes I wish I’d kept the notes I took on my day-to-day expenditures the last time I went to Ireland! I will have fewer expenditures this time, as my lodging while on the course is paid by the awarding institution (also, I won’t be doing as much sightseeing, so I won’t have a lot of entrance fees). I plan to put my hostels at the beginning and end of the trip on my credit card, for simplicity’s sake, and will probably do the same with the few gifts I plan to pick up in Ireland for family back home (As well as for myself…I still mourn the beautiful blue jumper I bought when I was there last and neglected to put in cedar over the winter! Doggone moths!) So mainly I need to think about food and personal care products, overseas calling cards, transportation on Bus Éireann, my share of the electricity, a round or so in the pub at night, and emergency money. Food shouldn’t be too dear, as most of the time I’m either in self-catering or B&B accommodations (last time I stayed in self-catering I lived pretty well and quite frugally on sandwiches, breakfast cereal, packaged soup and baked beans, and whatever I could get in the way of salad or other produce). I don’t see myself doing much eating in restaurants other than the odd time here and there. Any suggestions from friends who have been to Ireland recently as to what a reasonable daily budget might be under such circumstances? I really should order my currency tomorrow, and t would be nice to have a starting point for determining how much I’m likely to need.
