So now its done. We are home. We were 5.3 miles short of 6,000 miles when I parked the rig in its place behind the house, which is unfortunate, as I must now refer to its as 5,000 miles +. It took 25 days. The first 4,000 miles of it took up 22 days, almost all of it on two lane roads with no shoulders, or gravel, or dirt roads. The final 1,994.7 miles was done in three days and was accomplished on the Interstate Highway System, part of Dwight D. Eisenhowers legacy. During the trip out we camped at some of the most incredibly beautiful locations on Earth. On the trip home we camped our first night in the parking lot of the Sundance Casino in Winnemucca, Nevada and the second night in the parking lot of a Wendys at a truck stop in Laramie, Wyoming. On the way out we meandered and stopped to look at anything we might find interesting. The road home was an endless grind where I set the cruise control at 5 mph over the speed limit and let it eat road, stopping only for fuel. I referred to it as, kicking my box down the road. Compared to the previous 22 days, it was like watching a movie on fast forward. Jean took close to 2,000 photos during the trip and I took several hundred. In the coming days we will begin to sort things and relive our trip. As we do so I plan to write about it, because there were countless interesting stories to tell. I have shared some, but what I posted by typing on the small screen of my phone is only the tip of the proverbial iceberg. It was probably the closest thing to a religious experience I will ever see. We left Laramie well before sunup, as I wanted to get to Cheyenne, where we would turn off I-80 and head south on I-25, before the sun came up to burn out my eye jacks. An amazing sunrise was underway as we crossed the line into Colorado. Just south of the state line there is one of those steel silhouette pieces one sees placed along roadways. This one is of a large buffalo bull on a prominent hilltop, overlooking the highway. As we got closer I could see the bull seemed to be running from some sort of satellite dish structure placed behind it. Perhaps it was just chance and the satellite dish was placed there after the buffalo silhouette, disappointing the artist, as they might feel it detracted from their effort. Or, perhaps the silhouette was placed there after the satellite dish and purposely posed to appear as if it were running from this symbol of modern technology, which has replaced the once vast herds of buffalo roaming the land. If it was the latter it may well be the first and only artwork Ive ever seen where I immediately comprehended its intended message at first glance, without anyone having to explain it to me.
