So now it’s my lunch hour and I go out to grab some lunch. It’s hot but considering what has been going on, I am in jeans and a hip length trench coat. The only part of my skin that is exposed is my face, so am confident as I stroll happily. A few people say hello and I respond but there is particular one. As usual he says hello and I responded, but continued to chat “Kuja hapa nikusalimie’ I walked faster. “Ni wewe naongelesha madam” I didnt even look back, but I heard him hurling insults calling me those abusive names. “Unajifanya hapa malaya hii ndio maana mnavuliwa nguo” he chanted. So as I got near the office, I looked back and luckily he had not followed me. So am here sitting thinking. It’s not actually about the dressing anymore. It’s personal. Most people have issues, inner stress, name them, but they have found a media (women) to channel their anger and bitterness or what they may be going through. So now do they expect that anytime a stranger says hi, we should pop champagne, order flowers, grab a table and start connecting to avoid violence? Please, you can be better than this.
