So now the Klan is planning a get-together just down the road in Abbeville. The good news is that they claim not to be anti-Latino or African American, only the Zionist Jews. Do we, or how do we, respond? Lets drop back for a moment and contemplate: I confess that my first instinct was to go down there and protest, even confront. Then I remembered the passionate debate in 1976, when the Nazis marched through Skokie, a tremendously Jewish suburb of Chicago. Confront? Or stay home and turn Main Street into a ghost town? There is no right answer, but it has nothing to do with their inalienable right to act lower than animals. We must also consider whether their gathering will be on private property, which I assume it is. This is what happened to the annual gathering of the Klan on Labor Day in Stone Mountain. They moved it onto private property, where they used/misused their right to free speech and assembly. Most importantly, we must not empower evil people to define the terms of our engagement. That is what we enable them to do when they stick out their tongues at us and we try to bite back. Somehow, we must find a way to determine the terms of engagement, take the upper hand. Dr. King was a master at this. Perhaps a tremendous crowd of us should march a week or a month later as a sign of multi-faith, multi-creed, multi-color, multi-political, multi-orientation, solidarity against hate. It cannot be namby-pamby. It must be huge, or not at all. We must move forward cautiously, but not as cowards.
