So often I post about high end bikes, but have been asked by friends who are just getting into biking for a higher quality bike than what is sold at Wallymart but wont set them back a grand or more. I would suggest the Kona LanaI ($529 new), Marin Pioneer Trail or GT Agressor series ($350-550 new). All of these bikes have well built frames with decent geometry (the shape will greatly affect how it rides and feels), and will last you many years to come..and I wouldnt feel bad about upgrading them in the future to higher specs. All three brands put the money into the frame design and technology..instead of components (like Trek who put the money into cheap parts that look good, but gives you a crap frames that are really bad), and oftentime will use the same frame for higher end bikes..but just with lower end parts that can be replaced or upgraded when you have extra money. I know for some people even $550 is a big steep, and often if you get last years model clearance, or a used one off Ebay, you can get any of these bikes in the $3-400 range rather easily. Or you can buy a current frame at your local bike shop (local bike shops will start clearancing out the 2014s soon as 2015 will be coming in, so expect a bargain). It is much better investment than wasting your money on a Toy Store bike like Next, Mongoose (yah they suck now), Huffy or anything found at a big box store..there is a difference and you will notice it right away. Later I will post a detailed videoblog as to what to look for and spot on a good Vs bad bike in the entry level market.
