So often when I and other female speakers are being introduced, I think to myself: What about the fact that we are mothers? Such a huge part of our lives that barely gets a mention and that we ourselves hardly emphasise! Such is the materialistic, individualistic world in which we live. That ones writing an article or book is so valued but the hard work and effort -literally the blood, sweat and tears, as well as the love and laughter- put in to building the human beings of the future is merely a footnote! Ma sha Allah my beloved eldest son is travelling to Makkah right now on his way to performing his first ever Umrah. He is with my parents and I feel so happy for him because there could be no better people for him to travel with Ma sha Allah. I wish I could be with him to be the one who introduces him to the Kabah, to the mountain of Uhud, to Masjid Quba and so much more... It really is a blessing to be a mother, if only we realised its worth. To have physically, emotionally and mentally nurtured him for 12 years (plus nine months!) and for him now to be at the stage where he can set out into the world and do good deeds is just - Subhan Allah! How true the Arabic line of poetry, which goes along the lines of: Our children are our hearts developing feet and running off! How blessed is the mother of righteous children! She sows the seeds, nurtures them and carefully wards off weeds. She is vigilant and looks out for pests and bad weather that may harm her little sapling. She prunes and waters, she feeds and quietly works hard and then one day, by the permission and Tawfeeq of Allah, the little sapling grows into a little tree and bears fruit that everyone can benefit from. The reward is hers, for every good thing that comes from her little tree including generations of trees to come! May Allah protect all of our children. May He bless them and make them beacons of light in what often feels like a dark world. May He give them wisdom and goodness and light.
