So on my break I was reading about Locks of Love because my hair is down to my arse again and I usually donate when it gets that long. I wanted to make sure the charity was still giving back rather than lining executive pockets. Theyre doing ~okay~ as far as income vs. actual charitable output, but Im going to research a couple other places because they only manage to make one wig for every 300 donations, and are using one, single, individual wig maker who charges them about a grand per wig. Apparently Pantines Beautiful Lengths is more effective with one wig completed for every 20 donations (meaning 19 of the donations, the hair is too thin, too dry, too brittle, too grey, too chemical damaged from perms and hair coloring, etc.) but thats still a hell of a lot better than 1/300. Need to look into their finances. However, another charity caught my attention in a bad way. Apparently the Susan G. Komen foundation, better known as the people who own the pink ribbon and slogan, for a cure have some shady shit going on. For on thing, theyre sue happy, to the point of slogan bullying - meaning theyve sued the pants off of smaller charities for using any form of their slogan, even so generic as searching for a cure, the same shade of pink, or a clip-art pink ribbon. The lawsuits have driven several smaller charities out of function, forcing them to use donated funds for legal fees and damages paid to Komen - instead of being able to use it for the cause it was donated towards. This is disgraceful. Theyre all working towards the same goal, for the sake of humanity, right? What right should Komen have to decimate the competition when it shouldnt be a competition in the first place. Not only that, but Ms. Komen makes almost $700,000.00 a year, having given herself a 64% raise in 2010, while at the same time cutting funds to charitable expenses such as walks-for-a-cure and breast exams at Planned Parenthood, blaming the economy. Sorry, but if the economy is so bad you have to tighten the charities belt, why in the hell are you giving yourself a $280,000.00 annual raise? She gave Planned Parenthood the money back, due to backlash, but her exorbitant pay and legal bullshit makes me want to avoid her pink trademarks as a gimmick and donate to smaller charities instead, or better yet - pledge directly to a facility doing medical research with a good results rate.
