So, one of the truly GREAT operatic divas has finally died. Magda Olivero (1910-2014). I was beginning to believe her to be literally immortal. Her career started in 1932 but she retired in 1941 upon her marriage. However, at the request of the composer Cilea, she returned to the stage 10 years later. She was now in her early 40s, often an age when divas retire, but she had over 25 years ahead of her! She finally retired from the operatic stage in 1981 at 71yo. Her debut at The Met. in 1975 was legendary. One of THE great Toscas, among many other roles. She was, in my opinion, a better actress than Callas and could DEFINITELY sing her off stage.
