So outside today it is still quite morbidly cold so I have decided not to poke my nose outside of my door!...a perfect day to hole up in my office and work on my newest book. You might be interested to know, I do not use a computer or word processor, I do all my writing on an electric typewriter. My process seems to be best suited to writing paragraph after paragraph on a page, taking the page out, re-reading, and scrawling, in longhand, the changes in the margins of the paper. I then put in a new sheet of paper and rewrite the paragraphs including the handwritten changes. I do this over and over again until I have a finished page of story. The only complaint that I have is when I sit and type for hours I get a sharp burning pain between my shoulder blades, probably because I am lost in thought, forget good posture and slump! It is interesting when I paint for instance, (my paintings were very large 10x7 ft canvases) I would be so engrossed in what I was doing, I would forget to breath, and would not remember until my head swooned ! There were times when I was restoring Icons in churches and cathedrals. I would be on scaffolding 30 ft above the floor. Again, so complelty engrossed in what I was doing, forgot I was on scaffolding, and would step back to get a better perspective of the painting and fall! It got to the point where I would be tethered to the scaffold! Now, one could argue, concentration of that level is a good thing. Not always ! I remember when my children were teenagers and I was lost in one of my books, either writing or doing the illustrations. That is when they would come and ask, May I borrow the car?, Can I get $20 out of your purse?, or is it ok if I stay over night with 25 other kids?......of course my answer would be YES, because I didnt even hear what they asked! My word of advice for the day, never let anyone you have given birth to, drive your car....but thats ANOTHER story ! PP
