So, people ask me why I came to Israel. And its kinda embarrassing to admit that I actually came here because living in Russia sometimes is not an option. Why? - they ask. Well, for starters, because in Russia anyone can be convicted for a crime they didnt commit for pure political reasons. Did you know that theres basically no opposition in Russia? People are afraid to oppose, and the one who wasnt afraid to call himself the leader of opposition was convicted for political reasons once, is now kept under house arrest, and the court is about to convict him once again. People are getting angry and desperate, but only those who are aware of whats going on, and more and more of them are leaving the country for a chance of getting a normal life. The majority of the population is convinced that Putin is their saviour and is leading the country into its Golden Age II or whatever. They celebrate the annexation of Crimea (what do they even need it for?) and give hate speeches agains the States and the EU, who are probably just jealous of the Mother Russias supreme greatness. Meanwhile, the sanctions (but the Crimea is ours!) have left the people with no import of agricultural products from Europe, meaning I now feel guilty over eating a morsel of Italian parmesan, because my friends in Russia are deprived of such a pleasure - and you dont want to taste the cheese that was produced in Russia, I mean it. It all probably sounds absurd, but its the reality, and nobody - or close to nobody outside of Russia is aware of it - not that anybody should give a damn, of course. Theres so much more to tell on the issue, but the bottom line is - dont be surprised if you start meeting more nice Russian immigrants in your country, wherever you live. They are running away because their country has been taken from them by their own people, once again. Just... be aware. We need it.
